Bodog Ari

I'm Ari Engel and am also known as BodogAri online. I've played poker for a living for virtually my entire post-college life. In the last few years I have started teaching people my style and philosophy on poker tournaments. Many of them have done very well. If you are interested in getting my help, email:

Trying to Bubble

One of my little mottos has always been, try to bubble, they won't let u, and you'll pick up alot of chips. The last 24 hours have been very succesful, in that I have bubbled 4 tourneys. (Within 5 people of $). Even though it is fustrating getting far in a tournament, and not showing any return, I believe that this is definately a long-run profitable strategy. Of course, like anything else in this game, alot depends on your table, situation etc. and but the general notion of trying to bubble has allowed me to get to many final tables in very good chip situations.

I will be leaving Vegas shortly, and although my wrist remains braceletless, I have had an enjoyable and educational experience. I have a long way to go, but this was definately a step in the right direction.

I am having some succes using the same tatic i have made 5 final tables in the past 10 days with 2 first, 2 seconds and a forth place finish. But i have bubbled a good amount of tourneys as well which is fine as long as I finsh in the top 3 when i do make it to the final table beacuse thats where the real money is at.

We keep hearing stories of bubbling and almost making it... but how are you sustaining yourself if you keep 'alomst' winning yet never seem to be really cashing in?

Hey Fan,

I'm not, I'm broke, homeless, and now living on the streets. Can u bankroll me for the $3 rebuy today?

Ok, now for real, what I'm trying to say, is the real way to make money in MTT, is not to try and "cash" or move up and make more money so u can "sustain" yourself, rather, take risks, play aggressively, etc.

If u are my fan...

Ari, I posted this on one thread back. Can you discuss?

Ari, sorry I didn't meet you in vegas I met one of your roomies though... You did VERY well to make it to 33rd in the 1500 BUT once again my good friend I heard you reraised an early position raiser with A2 ALL IN for like 80,000????? he showed AQ and that was that... I may see the beauty of K 8 in certain situations but I do NOT see the beauty of A2 reraising an early raiser.. too much chance you are beat BADLY and wont get him to fold.. anyway if you care to rap more about this hand please do in case I don't quite get it...Shipitfish

of course i'm your fan... i'm not saying why arent you a millionaire... i was just curious how, while trying to max out your game skills, how you put food on the table? that's all...

Shipit, we were 2 people away from a money jump. I was trying to bubble, and like I wrote, ussually they won't let u bubble, even when u try very hard, that time they let me. Using the "try to bubble" strategy, has allowed me to put "food on the table" as my fan would say. Although, I find it preety funny that my fan is worried about me having enough to pay the rent.

BodogAri's fan- Do u mean a word u write? Have u ever watched me play? I'll let u know, u no longer have to worry about me putting food on the table. I really appreciate your concern for my wellbeing.

Why you gotta be rude? there aint nothin i said that was rude. If you are doing well, then just say so. I was just going from the vibe of your blog that you're aim to continuous improvement... if so how do you pay the bills... that was my only question. if you dont want to anser then just say, but why the attitude? What did i ever do to you?

My intention was not to offend u, I just found it funny that u were so concerned about me putting food on the table. Yes, I'm looking to continuously improve my game, but what connection does that have?

Anyway's if you're name was for ex: pokerkidd101 (not to pick on him-i just see his name in comment 2) I wouldn't have said a word. But u went out of your way to create this name "BodogAri's Fan", so i figured that u already know I am profitable, hence I could not understand you're question. I still don't. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that I'm not having trouble putting food on the table, and I'm sure u were the only reader to have these kind of q's, and given the name, that def has some irony. I lived in basements too long i guess, if I find that funny, but NOTG. Enjoy you're "fanage".

I chose the nickname becuase I enjoyed the blog... not your poker style exclusively. anyway, i thought you'd mildly apprecite the compliment of having a fan. I should clarify, I'm not 'worried' about your ability to eat - just curious how you sustain a healthy bankroll to allow you to play for the bigger pieces of the pie eventually. Considering the high intellectual content of your blog i'm surprise you chose to nit-pick such a minor point - nonetheless, I apologise for alarming and wish you only succes in your endeavours to achieve high goals in the poker realm. The only one request i would make should i be so bold would be that you not take what i say in an offensive and negative manner rather a positive and supportive one - i am your fan afterall... keep writing, keep winning and above all - keep commenting on the state of our insane world and those who try to erradicate the very freedom we live by.

"The only one request i would make, should i be so bold..."

Do people actually still say that?

If you are going to try and write such a lengthy piece of prose, at least run it through a spell/grammar check next time.
And no, your "food on the table" question still doesn't make sense. Move along.

Hey Ben,

No need to defend Ari. If you read my other posts, you'll see that i meant no harm and still wish him all the best. I think it would be quite insulting for him if someone like you came to his defense and raised such insignifcant points as spelling. Forgive me for not getting an A in spelling and... how i talk, well that's just a product of where i come from and how my parents are so i apologise if it offends you sir.
