Bodog Ari

I'm Ari Engel and am also known as BodogAri online. I've played poker for a living for virtually my entire post-college life. In the last few years I have started teaching people my style and philosophy on poker tournaments. Many of them have done very well. Ahhhhhhhh, now I remember why they call me "Bodog" ari

I wasn't too happy, after busting out early from the afternoon tournies, especially the 100R, where i was in for at least 1K (wasn't keeping track, could be more like 1500), and busted about 20 minutes after the rebuy period was over.

After a quick lunch break, I decide to sit down at the Bodog cash games, 1 10-20 nl and 1 5-10.

Needless to say (to any Bodog regulars at least), I'm way positive for the day now.

Calvin Aire is a pimp and I love Bodog.

Last days of Passover= 50 hours of no poker for me.

I'll be back in NY thursday night/Friday, so back to a regular schedule.

Happy Holidays all.

Last week I saw you pop into the 50-100 game at Bodog... first hand I watched you play you had A2s you limp make nut flush on turn and spank a guy in a raising war.. Next hand in BB I think, you have 23 23!!!!! You flop trips get in a raising war on turn with a board of 227K and river the 3 for good measure (not sure if he had you beat on turn as you capped it with him) and left right after up close to 2000 from just those 2 pots...I'm sure today you won 5000 or more there from what you posted here..... poker is an easy game huh Ari!!! If you play long enough and at 22 you haven't yet, you just might run as bad as well say Negreanu did last year where he didn't make ONE FINAL TABLE ALL YEAR from what I read and heard.. He finally broke out with a win a month or 2 ago... Think about that.. One of the best players in the world in Tourneys (all poker for that matter) not making a final table ALL YEAR LONG including all the world series events...When things are running good and you play mostly fishes poker is a dream come true.. when no matter what you do for months and months you can't win it's a nightmare and THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL YOU LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR GAME...It's the only true measure of a poker player how does he handle the losing streaks, how does he handle when he continually gets beat on 3 and 4 outers over and over for weeks and months...

Let me know how you do when you have this happen, from what I have seen you have maybe run bad for a day or 2 lol

Playing with you a bit Ari, but what I said here is the truth and eventually we all find out...If we last long enough.. Shipit

its very different. Negranue made no final tables last year, but how many did he play? 20-30? that's one day for me. I go all the time, w/o making a final table for one day. Not a biggie. If u can't make a final table in a year of online poker, u are not running bad, u are just not that good at poker imo.

I have seen more hands these past 18 months than just about anyone in poker. To say that I have been "running well" the entire time, is just false. It just so happens that one month online is equal to about 2 years of live play for most of the pros.

Ari, Had a feeling you might take my post wrong.. Look deeper into what I said...I've watched you play quite often.. You are a very sharp young aggressive poker player.. We all run good and bad eventually. It's during the bad runs where we find out what were made of.. My post wasn't just to you. Don't take it that way.. I'm sure in your time you have run bad.. Negreanu played 20-30 at just the world series.. Probably played over 100 all year maybe much more.. That's not my point however, reread my post and forget it was sent to you...I'm sure you also play very tough seasoned players and you are way ahead of your time for your short poker career.. Online can do that for good players, who want to become great..Shipit

I didn't mean to sound defensive, although I'm sure I did. However, I'm still not sure I agree with what u are saying.

Even when u are running "good" Poker is a game of ups and downs. I don't think u "have" to go through an extended losing streak to see what u are made of.

Why aren't those "regular" downs, that are part and parcel of being a poker player, enough to see what u are made of?

I'll be offline for the next 50 hours, but look forward to continued poker discussion.s

There is a BIG difference between the regular ups and downs and an EXTENDED period of only downs...During an extended down period where no matter what you do you just can't win, you start to doubt yourself, you start to lose confidence you start to wonder if you really ever were a good player...
Also you can start to play bad and end up compounding the issue.. you play hands you shouldn't you raise when you should only call you call when you should raise.. things like that.. sometimes we make them MUCH WORSE and MUCH longer then they would normally be.. I found this online from Jennifer Harmon and other Big names..
John D'Agostino knows how difficult it is to find the correct answer. "Any time I lose a few sessions in a row, I start questioning myself," D'Agostino says. "But I know that some days, even if I play perfectly, I'm going to lose."

Erik Seidel notes that in tournament poker, months-long dry spells are to be expected. In the midst of such a run it's hard to know if you're a victim of expected fluctuations or if there's something wrong with your game. "It's really hard to determine," says Seidel, "but I think most of us tend to fool ourselves and tend to think we're playing better than we are."

Then there's the inevitable interplay between bad cards and poor play. The pros report that in the midst of a bad run, bad luck can lead to bad decisions. Jennifer Harman notes that when things are going poorly, she has a tendency to push hands. "Let's say I have Ace-King and I don't flop a pair," says Harman. "I'll be in there raising. But there's no point. My table image is bad and nobody thinks I can flop a hand, so I can't bluff. I might as well wait till I flop a pair. At that point, my opponents are going to call me down and pay me off anyway."

For D'Agostino, a bad run can lead to more timid play. 'I definitely made some bad days a lot worse than they needed to be. Sometimes, I started playing more passively. In the middle of a hand I'd be asking myself, ‘How is this going to go wrong?' But if I played the hand the way I usually would, I'd have won the pot earlier on." D'Agostino says that when he has that sort of mindset, he's likely to miss bluffing opportunities.

Such a streak can destroy a promising player. Harman says, "There are a lot of players who have gone on losing streaks and can't recover. They start playing bad and thinking that they're doomed forever. And all of a sudden, they're on the rail."

All I'm trying to say Ari is if you have never been in a long dry spell it's hard to understand it.. It's like me telling you about the SUN when you live underground, I can say it's warm, it's hot, it's soothing it's bright and beautiful. But if you live in the shadows or darkness you will have to experience it for yourself to truly understand and know what it feels like... Same with these losing streaks compared to the ups and downs of most sessions. From a book I read... ~~~ A TRUE COLD SPELL IS A THING OF WONDER. IT IS ALMOST BREATHTAKING IN ITS SCOPE SAND DEPTH. IT IS BREATHTAKING IN THE WAY THAT IT FEELS AS IF THE OXYGEN HAS BEEN SUCKED OUT OF THE ROOM. ITS A FEELING OF BETRAYAL, THE APPEARANCE OF A SUDDENLY TOPSY TURVY WORLD WHERE LOGIC NO LONGER SEEMS TO FUNCTION, BAD PLAYERS ARE REWARDED, GOOD PLAY IS PENALIZED, A FUNHOUSE MIRROR WORLD WHERE LOGIC AND THE FAMILIAR LAWS OF LONG EXPERIENCE NO LONGER APPLY. IT'S THE DISMISSAL OF A WORLD YOU KNEW OR THOUGHT YOU KNEW. 20-1 50-1 100-1 LONGSHOTS HAPPEN ROUTINELY YOU QUESTION YOUR GAME YOUR LUCK, YOUR FATE, EVEN YOUR DESTINY YOU REMEMBER ALL THE LOSES IN YOUR LIFE FROM CHILDHOOD THEY SEEM TO FORM A PATTERN. YOU BECOME THE DEFINATION OF DOUBTFUL, TENTATIVE, DEFENSIVE, FATALISTIC. FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF REACHES A NEW LEVEL YOU NEVER KNEW EXISTED. THEN THE FINAL LEVEL OF BITTERNESS ANGER AND RESENTMENT.~~~~

I think you now see the difference...

Also playing online is MUCH MUCH different then live, where most of us *older* players started... I play both now. I can see how my game has progressed MUCH more then only playing live, but I wouldn't say 1 month is equal to 2 years of live play... here's why.
Playing say 4-5 times the hands you would play live is a faster way to learn poker.. But you also get better by discussing poker and hands and reading... Playing is probably the best teacher but no way do I believe 1 month of online is equal to 2 years of playing live.. there's so much to learn in those 2 years that you just can't grasp in one month of online.. If I was to guess I would say it's about 3-4 times.. not 24, although for you playing 20 tourneys a day it might be 12-1 meaning 1 year equals one month of live... Been fun, have a good trip talk when you get back... SHIPIT

You both seem to be agruing the same thing. Yes you see many many more hands over a given period. What I think Ari is trying to say about the 1 month = two years is that he's having those "bad runs" that you're saying he has yet to experience due to the pure volume of hands/tourneys he sees/plays. Bottom line is that even though I don't play even 1/100th the amount Ari and other guys do I have still seen the ups and downs though on a much smaller scale and they have tought me much more about my game than when I was playing at my "best" ever. I think those rough stretches have made me a much better player than i had ever dreamed of. Fortunately, meeting you Ari and watching you play has made me take an even higher interest in becoming a better player in every respect. Wish you continued success ...as long as I'm not at the table lol

Av.. My last thoughts on this then it's time to really get into the more strategy aspects of hands and overall poker play as I'm sure Ari would like to do... Hand discissions things like that..Say Ari or anyone play 12 hours online on a few computers, that's about 10-12 times the hands you would play live.. so running bad for say 3 months live you would *only* run bad for a week maybe 2 online.. however it would be much more condensed and not spread out.. how someone would handle that might be different then say running bad for months live, where it would appear to last forever..and could really eat away at your confidence.. The online player might have an edge because it's much more condensed so if you could develop a strategy to combat those days and maybe weeks online of running terribly bad, you may not lose quite as much.. As far as learning to get through them. I'm not sure if one could learn more or less about their game running bad for a week online compared to months in say live games...

Ok let's talk poker and hands tourneys or ring games...
